Blog Overview
Did Jesus exist, or was he just a myth as people are claiming? The objective of these blogs is two-fold: to show you that the Bible is historically accurate and that Jesus is OUR resurrected Lord and Savior. The sheer amount of the small things that we reveal that sit in the background of the Bible will show You that the whole Bible is historically accurate, so if the Bible is historically accurate then the Bible should be trusted. The evidence for the death and resurrection of Jesus is strong. The amount of evidence for the life and ministry of Jesus before his death is not overwhelming. This might seem reasonable based upon the fact that Jesus did not reveal himself or come on the scene until the last 3 years of his ministry. Jesus had to have existed since there is substantial evidence, both written and archeological show, as noted above, the death and resurrection took place.
2 Examples of the “Small Things”:
Salome-daughter of Herodias
You can read about how John the Baptist was executed in Matthew 14:1-12, Mark 6:14-29, and Luke 9:7-9. These verses note that the head of John the Baptist was given to the daughter of Herodias (Herodias was Herod’s brother’s old lady, Philip). Herod was digging the dance of Herodias’s daughter (wink, wink). The dancer was the daughter of Herodias, who was Salome. Salome, the daughter of Herodias was confirmed by Josephus in his writing in Antiquities 18.110-119 as the daughter of Herodias who danced for Herod.
Writings and other recorded history are great examples of corroborated evidence that shows that an event took place, but when you can find physical evidence such as a statue, inscription at a historical site, or other things such as pottery, coins. Discoveries such as these provide us tangible, holdable, viewable evidence that shows the person existed, so this event more likely than not took place.
There are three coins that are known to have the inscription and picture of Queen Salome on a coin, She had married Aristobulus of Chalcis around AD 34, who was the King. The coin has King Aristobulus on one side and Queen Salome on the other. That is a pretty specific detail that the writers of the previously mentioned Gospels included. Why would someone put such a small piece of information in the Bible?
Pontius Pilate
Pontius Pilate was the Prefect of Judea during the time of Jesus. Pilate is mentioned throughout the Gospels during the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. You can see in the following Gospels: Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 22, and John 18, In these chapters, Pilate’s role in the crucifixion is shown.
As noted previously, coins and other inscriptions often prove that an individual existed. Coins were found from Pontius Pilate during his tenure as the Roman prefect of Judaea from 26 to 36 AD. These coins, known as prutah or bronze leptons, were issued in 29/30, 30/31, and 31/32 AD, corresponding to the fourth, fifth, and sixth years of his governorship.
There was also a stone found that noted that “Pontius Pilate-Prefect of Judea”. This helps provide more validity to who this individual is, which also provides more proof that the Bible is a historical document.
